A musical from scratch

Showstopper, York Theatre Royal

When one leading character asks another: “Have you any idea how hard it is to make Dick van Dyke out of marzipan for a 75th birthday cake?” you know you’re in the presence of comic genius .

And the utterly brilliant, inventive and funny improvisation team at Showstopper provide a work of genius before our very eyes, far more impressive than any magician’s trick.

Last night’s musical at the Theatre Royal was called We’ve only got ten candles, a suggestion from Gary in the dress circle (whose daughter was celebrating her 11th birthday) and into this impromptu production landed Morecambe and Wise and the Two Ronnies, along with a bizarre story line and delightfully odd characters. All being made up as they went along.

This cast can sing, they can dance, they can play multiple roles, and sometimes manage to keep a straight face. But let’s get down to basics.

The premise, if you’ve not seen Showstopper before, is to create and perform a show based on audience contributions. So along with the title, which was to be performed in the style of Shrek – and Carousel – we also got a stunning Beyonce double act, an unrequested but adored number in the manner of Chicago, and a homage to Alan Menken.

On this night, members of the audience asked the for music of Sondheim – always good to pastiche – and, surprisingly, my beloved Jason Robert Brown. And thank you, keyboard player, you hit that perfectly.

There’s occasional interruptions from the producer on the line to a theatre director (oh look, a real telephone) who keeps the audience participation at fever pitch.

What we can’t do is ask you to go along tonight and see if you agree, because tonight’s show will be completely different again. What we can guarantee is an evening of sheer delight for all who love musicals, and love being entertained in the finest possible way. Even without a guest appearance from Dick van Dyke. Well, he is 98 now.

There’s also a children’s version this afternoon. Details: Box office 01904 623568 | yorktheatreroyal.co.uk
